Ahead of the general elections in 2014, comes another headache for the fiscally-stretched UPA Government. An overwhelming majority — 96.6 per cent— of Indian Railway workers affiliated to the largest union has voted in favour of an indefinite strike if the Railway Ministry and the Government continue to ignore their long-pending demands. Key demands The key demands include scrapping of the new pension scheme, filling up vacant posts, creating more posts commensurate with the work load, setting up of the Seventh Pay Commission and better working conditions for train running staff. “Rail workers can no longer fill their stomachs with assurances,” said Shiva Gopal Mishra, General Secretary, All India Railwaymen’s Federation, announcing the results of the strike ballot at a press conference here on Tuesday. The National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a committee for the Seventh Pay Commission, before the Model Code of Conduct for the general elections comes into effect.  "We urge the PM to immediately constitute a committee for the Seventh Pay Commission, before the applicability of Model Code for the next general elections.
